Hezbollah deals more damage to Bush's credibility -
May 14, 2008 - 7:18:03 AM
BEIRUT, May 14 (Reuters) - Hezbollah's humbling of Lebanon's U.S.-backed government has dealt a further blow to American credibility in the region less than a year after Hamas Islamists seized Gaza from Palestinian leaders supported by Washington. Druze areas in shock after deadly clashes -
May 13, 2008 - 6:43:55 AM
CHOUEIFAT: The young mother stood aghast in the apartment which reeked
of cordite, its walls blackened, windows shattered and furniture
reduced to ashes.
"We're still numb from the horror of what we went through" Sunday, said
Nada, 49, who said she had to hide under a stairwell for four hours as
firefights raged outside her home.
Sheikh Abdallah al-Khishn, a local official in the town of Choueifat,
referred ironically to the Shiite Hizbullah movement insisting that its
mighty arsenal was intended for the resistance against Israel.

Lebanon's endless war -
May 13, 2008 - 6:29:44 AM
The Palestinians and Israelis get all the attention. But it is on the
tiny sliver of Mediterranean coast known as Lebanon that the political
dysfunction of the Middle East is truly epitomized. Beirut was a
major centre in Ottoman times: Indeed, the territory that is now Israel
was once ruled from that city. It retained its prominence under the
French, and became a freewheeling, sophisticated hub for wealthy Arabs
looking to escape the Bedouin parochialism of their native countries.
